World Cup number 2
Houffalize... The infamous tar seal starting climb caught me sleeping! I just didn't have the extra punch and within 1min I was back in 45th position, and out of the real race. The problem when you fall back this far early on, is that as soon as the track goes into single track, you have to wait your turn. I probably lost 1min just standing around! After this, I decided to race my own race, and focus on good technique and riding smooth. So it ended up being a good training ride, and I still managed to catch quite a few riders eventually finishing 23rd. The great news was that Susi had won! So, I got to drink Champagne and celebrate his victory. I knew he was going well, but to win a world cup is always amazing! Bart Brentjens retains the leaders jersey.

XC#1 : Madrid, ESP : 18-19.05.2002
We just finished the first world cup of the year. It was definitely a different race from the norm, with only small climbs of max 50m each. It was also very hot, and it made for some different results. Bart Brentjens took the lead from the start, then there was groups of 5 and 6 behind. I was mostly in the second of these groups, and only got dropped with one lap to go, when I was stung by an insect. I thought it was a bee, and as I am now pretty allergic to bees, I got scared and ripped my helmet off. Luckily it wasn't, but by the time I was back on the bike, I had been well dropped by the group, and passed by 2 more riders. I rode the final lap well, but still finished 15th. Susi was riding with me until 2 laps to go, when he took off, finally finishing 7th, so it was a decent start for our team. Helena also raced today, and had a good race finishing 61st.

Hi there..
I have spent the past 5 weeks doing Swiss Cups, Swedish Cups and French Road Races, trying to get the speed up for the upcoming World Cups. The first round is Madrid, next week! Its all been going right to plan, so hopefully the legs will be good!
Its been a relatively nice spring, with only one really rainy, cold weekend, which of course had 2 MTB events. It was one of those weekends where you just have to keep your head up, and keep racing, although all you want to do is quit and take a nice hot bath!
The high light for me was taking my first win in Sweden. I have been trying for 4 years too win one of these races, and the technically talented Swedes were always too fast!
Oh yeah... some new web sites to check out!

12-05-02 Swiss Cup #3, Hitnau
What a course... with the exception of a couple of short single tracks, this was 100% gravel roads. Talk about a road race!!! Luckily the climbing was quite steep, so this split things up a little bit. There was a group of 5, then I was in the next group of 5 behind. Susi rode well, and just lost the victory in a sprint finish to Julian Absalon (again!). I also had a sprint at the end, coming in 2nd of our pack, in 6th place. (Actually this is my best ever finish in a Swiss Cup!!!)

05-05-02 Swiss Cup #2, Granachin
Mud mud, slippery slidey mud. My legs were a bit dull after yesterdays efforts, yet I managed to hold a steady pace, finishing 10th. Julian Absalon won his second Swiss Cup of the year.. he is going to be fast this year!!
04-05-02 Lake Garda MTB Festival, Italy, 40km Marathon.
This was one of those races I prefer to forget about. Heavy rain for 2 days before and throughout the race made this one cold and miserable race. Also, the course was just a huge climb, which would never end, and then a long gravel road descent. I finished 3rd, behind Sigi Bauer (Giant) and my team mate Christoph Sauser. Straight after the race we packed our things and drove to Switzerland for the next race!

28-4-02 hi guys. I just finally managed to win a race in Sweden! It was the third time I have raced in Mjolby, where they have an ultra technical, yet very flat course. I was happy when it rained a lot on Saturday, as it made the course very slippery, much like we have at home in Dunedin! We rode on mostly single tracks, with lots of greasy rocks, and wet roots. I felt like I was able to flow very well through all the sections, saving a lot of energy. From the start I took it very conservative, and sat back in about 6th postition, meanwhile a couple of riders rode off ahead. I was riding with Henrik Spar, who beat me last weekend. When I realised how easy I could follow him through the technical sections, I knew I had a good chance. I sat on for most of the first 2 (of 5) laps, and then made my move to catch the first two riders, Mattias Karlsson and Frode Michaelsen (from Norway). With 2 laps to go, I had the lead, and was still feeling great. I finished with 2mins lead, finally winning a major Swedish race after 4 years of trying!
21-4-02 I raced the first round of the Swedish National Cup (UCI E2) this weekend in Helena's home town, Uppsala. We had a beautiful sunny spring day, and the track was 4km of hilly single track, and about 2km of completely flat. The race resembled more of a road event, with big bunches forming on the flat sections. We were at least 6 riders at the front until 3 (of 8) laps to go, when Henrik Sparr opened a 20sec margin. I jumped across to him soon after and for a while I felt confident I could take the race, but then the group from behind caught up to us, and we were a big group again going into the final lap. Then it was just a matter of who had the fastest, freshest legs. Fredrik Kessiakoff, from Team Crescent, put the hammer down early on one of the small climbs and opened a gap on everybody. My whole body was flooded in lactate, and I was finally dropped by Henrik as well, so finished up 3rd. I was content with that though, considering how fast Swedes are in these flat conditions. I'm a bit frustrated though after all these years, I still have never won a Swedish Cup!
