Road Races - 150/160km
13/14-4-02
Saturdays race was all small hills and high pace from start to finish. This was perfect MTB training! I felt smashed by half way, but then by the end I was
feeling okay again. A group of about 20 snuck away with 10km's to go, and I was bummed to miss it. Finally I finished about 4th of the remaining pack. The
day after we also raced a 160km flat, very uneventful race, but good training non-the less. The whole trip was a lot of fun, I was forced to speak french, and I
got a glimpse at how it is on the road scene. More then anything I realise how lucky I am with Volvo/Cannondale. (you could say we had a few hiccups!.. bad
directions, 2hrs extra driving... then trying to go to the cheap cafeteria style restaurants, 30min more driving... closed... finally eating at 11pm!... bed at 1pm...)
JOINED ANNEMASSE ROAD TEAM
11-4-02
With the help of my coach Benoit, I am now a member of a French Elite road club, Annemasse. I will join them for some road events when the schedule
permits. It was fun to go and meet the director, and see the club rooms, which was in the basement of a city building. On the walls were many pictures of
past riders, including Lee Chapman from Dunedin, NZ!

Commonwealth games MTB team
Cycling New Zealand has released the names today of their cycling team to
the Commonwealth Games to be held this July in Manchester (GBR), and for the
first time ever this includes 3 mountain bikers, one of which is the lone
male kiwi rider, Kashi Leuchs (Volvo Cannondale).
"I'm really proud to have been selected. Outside of the Olympic Games there
is no other event that really captures the imagination of the whole country
like the Commonwealth Games, and to be our nation's first male mountain
biker after being the first male mountain biker into the Olympics is a real
honour", said Kashi from his European base in France today.
The Commonwealth Games have decided to introduce Mountain Bike Cross Country
for the first time ever, for both men and women, and as the events are
broadcast around the world to more than 50 nations, it provides a welcome
promotional boost for the sport. Other major nations to attend will be
Australia, Canada, England, Ireland and South Africa.
"I don't know who else has been selected from other countries, but no doubt
Canada will be strong with riders like current World Champion Roland Green,
and Ryder Hesjedal. I also expect that England will provide stiff
competition from the likes of Liam Killeen and Barrie Clarke, and they'll
know the course well. Australia should also have some strong riders though I
know Cadel Evans will be fully committed to the road for the Games. Given
that I'm a world top ten rider, I'm really shooting for a medal at this
event".
The Commonwealth Games XC events are on July
25th.http://xtramsn.co.nz/sport/0,,3954-1300587,00.html

SOLANO BICYCLE CLASSIC
I took the day off on Tuesday, and went wine tasting with a few others from
the Saturn Team. It was a great way to spend a sunny day, and a good chance
to meet some of the road riders, who we never usually talk to very much. We
drove around and visited about 6 wineries in Napa Valley. I am no wine
connoisseur, so I just tried to tell the difference between the Pinot Noir's,
the Zimfendales, and the what's a me call its. Good fun!
The racing began on Thursday with the 150km road race. It was a very nice
scenic route, we had a gorgeous day, reasonable pace, and apart from a lot of
sketchy amateur riders causing crashes early on, everything went sweet.
There was just one section of brutal cross winds that split the bunch up.
Luckily I remembered it from last year, so was near the front. By the end I
was in the second group, in about 20th position.
The final 2 stages were a TT and a Criterium. There was not too much more to
note.. I finished 31st overall... it was all good racing, good weather, and
overall a perfect week of hard training.
I'm now on route back to Europe, and can't wait to finally see Helena, and
get back to my apartment after 2 months away!
SEA OTTER CLASSIC
Hello.. This week we raced the Sea Otter Classic, which began with a new
stage.. a Fat boy criterium. This is the first time I've ever done one of
these funny races, where we mountain bikers pretend to be roadie's, put slick
tires on and race around the same criterium that the road riders do later
on. Some of the guys went all out and even put 700c wheels on their mountain
bikes and put on big chain rings.. I don't know why, I had fun
spinning out at 120rpm in the tail wind! Actually the pace seemed quite
easy, after doing all the Redlands road stuff last week, so I tried my luck
after 20min and attacked. Rune Hoydahl, Steve Tilford, Paul Rowney and Andy
Jacques-Maynes, joined me soon after and we stayed away for the remaining
30min. Meanwhile the bunch lingered about 15-20sec behind the whole way.
Coming into the last lap I tried to jump the others, but they came around me
just before the last corner. The old man Tilford took the win, I came 4th.
The next 3 days were all a bit of an uphill battle for me.. I just became
more and more fatigued, for sure because of my hard last week in Redlands.
The Time trial was still okay (22nd), and actually I improved my time by
30sec from last year. But for Saturday and Sunday I was full of lactate, and
suffering just to finish mid-pack. I still made it through the races, and
ended up 26th on the overall.
