Hello!

Finally, after long months of preparation and hard training (yeah sure!) the 2001 Mountain bike calendar has gotten underway with the Sea Otter classic in Monterey, California. For me its the start of my 5th year on the road, and my 2nd year with Volvo/Cannondale.

During the winter I moved, together with Helena, into an apartment in Annecy, France. It can be a bit cold during winter, but we could still train outside most days. We are really close to some great ski fields, and used this as strength training days! You would be amazed at how good a days skiing is for both strength and aerobic conditioning!

I also managed to finally try my hand at some cyclo-cross racing. This traditional European event, mixes road and mountain biking on a short(2-3km), mostly dirt track loop for about 1hr. They usually add obstacles too, that you have to jump off the bike and run over! Riders aged from 6 to 60 were all racing together, in the mud, rain and cold! I was also amazed at the quality and depth of the fields that turned up to these local races. To give you an example, I only managed to finish 6th, 2nd, and 7th in the 3 events I entered. Afterwards everyone gathered together in a big hall to drink warm wine, eat cake and award the winners. I could really feel how deep cycling is wedged into the culture here, and it was just fun to come and take part!

Rhodes, Greece was the destination for my pre-season groveling! It was a 5 day, 550km road tour. The purpose of coming down was just to get some good quality training. I entered with the Marco Polo Team, together with Nathan Dalberg (NZ), three guys from Hong Kong, and Klomp, from Netherlands. Unfortunately for us, we had heavy rain for the first two days of racing. The tempo was very high with strong teams like Maipi and Swiss Post leading the way. I finished each day just happy that I had made the time cut, and could continue! By the end I was feeling much fitter, but very tired!

Our teams training camp was in Alpine, close to SanDiago from March 3rd. It was heaps of fun, as I got to see all my team friends again, Christophe, Tinker, Cederic, Anne, Cadel, Steph... But it was also a busy week, as we had to make a lot of team photographs, and sit through many long meetings etc. I finally got to see the new full suspension cross country Cannondale bikes for this year, the "Scalpel". And we got all the new Peak Performance clothing, and Oakley glasses etc. Life is tough!!! From camp we moved onto Redlands, where us XC boys had 6 days of road racing to deal with! I ended up in 40th place, which for me, in such a big tour, was pretty good!

Here is my schedule of races that I hope to do this year.
