Press release from the New Zealand Mountain Bike Association (NZMBA)
Tuesday 11 July 2000.
Leuchs climbs world rankings. Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series, Round Seven Cross Country, Alberta, Canada. 8/9 July 2000.

With his excellent 13th placing at round seven of the Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike World Cup this weekend, 22 yr old Kashi Leuchs (Volvo-Cannondale) improved his world ranking from 15th to 12th, overtaking Jose Antonio Hermida (ESP) as the highest ranked U23 rider in the open category.
The race weekend was held high in the spectacular Canadian Rockies at the Nordic Center in Alberta. Unlike the previous year when some riders had to be treated for hypothermia, the weather was perfect and the 32.8 km course dry and fast.
Bas Van Dooren (NED, Be-One) lead the men's race for the first four laps until he was passed by the eventual winner Cadel Evans (AUS, Volvo-Cannondale) who has surged back to his pre-crash form and looks set to challange for gold in Sydney. Leuchs, also selected to compete in the men's mountain bike race at the Sydney Olympics, finished 6 minutes off the pace in a time of 2:22.37. Miguel Martinez (FRA, Full Dynamix), the world number one, finished fourth after having to borrow a bike for the second race in a row due to customs delays.
In the women's race Barbara Blatter (SUI Scott USA) won in a time of 1:55:41, with Alison Sydor (CAN, Volvo-Cannondale) finishing in front of team mate Alla Epifanova (RUS). This takes Blatter to the top of the World Cup standings.
The riders have a month off before the eighth and final round of the Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross country series which will be held September 2/3 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Hello again,
I had another WorldCup PB with 7th here in Monte Saint Ann, Quebec, Canada.
I could feel I was on a good day from the start, when I was able to stay in the top 8 for the start loop and first climb. Then during the first lap I had gear trouble, (twice the chain fell over the rear cluster into the wheel) so I lost contact with the leaders, but was still in about 15th.
For almost the rest of the race I was on my own, bridging gaps and passing one rider at a time as they blew. It was a technical course, and very physically demanding. Many riders who started too fast hit the wall, and fell back many places in the final laps. My legs were feeling great and I was able to keep a good consistent speed throughout the race, and finished strong with out many problems (apart from losing my chain 3-4 times, and putting it over the cluster once more!) Cadel Evens and Christoph Sauser(Volvo/Cannondale) got 1st and 2nd, making a fantastic day for the team. We are now leading the overall Cross Country team points for the first time this season, a lead we hope to increase in next weeks World Cup in Canmore!
